The Delhi Sub-3 Marathon: Race Report
By Oliver • Delhi Marathon
Getting to the start line in decent mental and physical health is miracle enough, let alone ready to chase down a Boston Qualifying time.
I had 100 days to get the job done.
Why do this?
In a string of races in 2025 I exceeded what I thought I was capable of.
- September 14th — Ladakh Marathon: 3h 46m
- September 21st — Bangalore Marathon: 3h 11m PB
- November 9th — Goa Ironman 70.3: 4h 52m
For my age bracket, qualifying meant 3:00. A safe BQ demanded a 2:55.
No distractions. No triathlons. No trails. Just one goal: a sub-3 marathon.
Reality Check
Fatigue from 100km training weeks came knocking when it was time to sustain 4:10/km splits deep into Sunday long runs.
Injury constantly hovered in the background — my previously stress fractured hip began throbbing again.
Sanity Check Races
Bangalore Midnight Half Marathon
Result: 1h 26m • 4:06/km average • strong negative split
Chennai 20 Miler
Result: 2h 13m • 4:08/km average
These races suggested a sub-3 might be possible on a cold, flat Delhi morning. But only just.
Race Plan
- 0-5km → 4:15/km (easy)
- 5-21km → 4:10/km
- 21-32km → 4:08/km
- 32-42km → 4:05/km
Race Reality
At 10km I found myself pacing a group chasing the same dream. We shared gels, water, and determination.
At 32km something unexpected happened: runner's high. Delhi monuments lit by morning sun. Feet tapping the tarmac. Suddenly the race felt uncomplicated.
The final 2km delivered the inevitable lactic wall. Twenty seconds lost — a reminder that pacing discipline matters.
Finish Time
2:55:35
4.5 minutes faster than Boston Qualifier.
